Communications of Hossein and Bill ((Reply to Hossein - April 25, 2023)

April 25, 2023

Dear Hossein,

I had forgotten that you also had a stent procedure following your stroke in 2011. My procedure went well according to the doctors and I am getting back to my normal routine of daily walks around the marina. And it feels like much of my energy is returning. It is always a bit exhilarating to feel one has escaped a health event that could have been much worse.  The pace of loss of longtime friends and colleagues is quickening as I approach my 76th birthday so every day of relative health is a blessing. Like you, I continue to be in awe of the advances of medicine and what is possible today.  If you communicate to Ehsan any changes you would like to make in the English version of our book, I will make those changes in the final draft. I think your idea of publishing the book in both Farsi and English is a one worthy of consideration. I will await your guidance on these final decisions for the book. In the meantime, I will give some thought to how best to announce the book here in the U.S. and in other English-speaking countries. Who could have thought that our brief meeting in London so many years ago would have flowered into so many productive collaborations?  I am delighted to know that the breast cancer research is a priority in your work with Bristol University. This is a subject very close to my heart given my daughter’s treatment for breast cancer. Alisha continues to do well with her recovery and has been promoted to full professor as her university. Our children continue to bring joy and pride to us.  The presentations and publications resulting from the Bristol research are quite important. And I am delighted to hear of the potential of a book on cancer and addiction. Over the course of my career, the close link between these disorders has become quite obvious both from the direct effects of alcohol and other drugs and the high rates of nicotine addiction among those addicted to other drugs. This is landmark work you are doing that could exert a profound influence on the future of recovery.  I look forward to the photos of the co-guides’ shawl ceremony. You are doing remarkable work in preparing tomorrow’s leaders of Congress 60. And the preparation and support of guides and co-guides in Congress 60 is a model to be replicated throughout the world. Please extend my warmest regards to your family and to all members of Congress 60.

Friends and Brothers Forever
