از نامه‌ی اخیرتان و ویدیوها و عکس‌هایی که فرستادید بسیار سپاسگزارم. تصاویر ساختمان جدید دانشگاه چنان زیبا بودند که نفس را در سینه‌ام حبس کردند. تنها فکری که به ذهنم رسید این بود که در سال‌های آینده چه زندگی‌هایی در این اتاق‌ها پرورش خواهند یافت. چه دستاورد باشکوهی است این مؤسسه، و چه میراثی برای آینده‌ی درمان و بهبودی اعتیاد به‌جا خواهد گذاشت.
از آرزوهای خیرخواهانه‌تان برای سلامتی‌ام سپاسگزارم، به‌ویژه که می‌دانم خودتان نیز با چالش‌های مشابهی روبه‌رو بوده‌اید. احساس می‌کنم هر روز قوی‌تر می‌شوم و از اینکه خستگی‌ام برطرف شده و انرژی گذشته‌ام پس از عمل قلب بازگشته، بسیار خوشحالم. چیزهای بسیاری برای سپاسگزاری دارم.
آماری که درباره‌ی اعضای کنگره ۶۰ و ترک سیگارشان اشاره کردید، دستاوردی تاریخی است؛ موفقیتی که خود را در افزایش طول عمر و بهبود کیفیت زندگی نشان خواهد داد، همان‌گونه که در مورد ما نیز پس از ترک سیگار چنین شد. آنچه کنگره ۶۰ در زمینه‌ی ترک سیگار انجام داده، چراغی راهنما برای برنامه‌های درمان اعتیاد و انجمن‌های بهبودی در سراسر جهان است.
اطلاعاتی که درباره‌ی کشت تریاک در ایران برای مصارف دارویی ارائه کردید، بسیار جالب بود. این تغییر در وضعیت قانونی می‌تواند به درک و پذیرش عمومی و حرفه‌ای روش DST کمک شایانی کند. آنچه برایم به‌ویژه جالب بود، دیدگاه شما مبنی بر این بود که تریاک از نظر کیفی با سایر مواد افیونی متفاوت است و می‌تواند در پزشکی کاربردهایی فراتر از مسکن یا آرام‌بخش داشته باشد.
فکر می‌کنم پیش‌تر اشاره کرده بودم که در حال کار بر روی مقاله‌ای درباره‌ی «سرایت اجتماعیِ بهبودی» هستم. اخیراً به این نکته پی بردم که ویژگی سرایت‌پذیری بهبودی در کنگره ۶۰ نه از راه آلودگی، بلکه از راه محبت منتقل می‌شود — نکته‌ای که در عنوان کتابتان درباره‌ی چهارده وادی و استفاده‌تان از واژه‌ی عشق نیز تأیید می‌شود. واژه‌ی «عشق» به ندرت در گفتار حوزه‌ی اعتیاد به کار می‌رود، اما به گمان من جوهره‌ی فرایند درمان و بهبودی در همین واژه نهفته است. نوشتن این مقاله مدتی زمان می‌برد، اما از این کار لذت می‌برم؛ گویی نوعی مراقبه بر روی این موضوع است.
همچنین صمیمانه‌ترین تبریکاتم را بابت ساخت ساختمان جدید برای مسافران خانم در شهر اصفهان تقدیم می‌کنم.

Dear Hossein,
Thank you for your most recent letter and the included videos and photos. The images of the new university building are so beautiful they took my breath away. All I could think about was the lives that those rooms will nourish in the coming years. What a crowning achievement this institution is and will be for the future of addiction treatment and recovery.
I appreciate your well wishes for my health knowing you have been through similar challenges. I feel I am getting stronger each day and am delighted that the fatigue has lessened and that my old energy is returning after the heart procedure. I have much to be thankful for.
The figure you note of Congress 60 members who have quit smoking is a milestone achievement that will be measured in increased years of life and enhanced quality of life as it has in our own when we each achieved successful smoking cessation. What Congress 6o is achieving related to smoking cessation is a beacon to addiction treatment programs and recovery communities across the world.
The information you provided on the cultivation of opium in Iran for medical purposed was most interesting. That change in legal status should contribute to the public and processional understanding and acceptance of the DST method. Of particular interest is your suggestion that opium is qualitatively different than other opioids in terms of its potential use in medicine beyond its use as a sedative or painkiller.
I think I mentioned before that I had started working on a paper on the social contagion of recovery. It recently occurred to me that the contagious quality of recovery within Congress 60 was transmitted not be infection but by affection—something confirmed by your use of the term love in the title of your book on the Fourteen Valleys. The term love is rarely used in discourse within the addictions field, but I think it captures the essence of the healing process within addiction recovery. It will take some time to complete this paper but I am enjoying what has become something of a meditation on this topic.
Also, my deepest congratulations on the new building for female travelers in the city of Isfahan.
