I was delighted to hear from Shani that you are exploring conferences in which to present some of your papers. I shared a list of possible conferences with her that I hope will be helpful.

This week I am reviewing a manual prepared by the U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Treatment on peer recovery support services aimed at training people in recovery to assume helping roles in addiction treatment programs and various recovery community organizations. As I reviewed it I thought about the great care taken in Congress 60 to train Guides and Co-Guides, which could be a model for what efforts to expand the recovery support workforce in the U.S.  What you do within Congress 60 in this area is far more rigorous than what is being done in the U.S. We could learn a lot from you through the training and examinations you use.

I have mentioned the photo gallery on the history of addiction treatment and recovery that I am adding to my website. I have been working on that for more than a year and have one more section of it to complete before launching the gallery on the website. The photos you have sent me over the years would make a wonderful addition to the Congress 60 website—a way to tell the Congress 60 story in images rather than words. If you do that, I could link to it on my website where I currently have your books and papers posted.

One of my long-term friends in recovery passed away over the weekend. He had recovered from alcoholism many decades ago and achieved much in his life but was never able to quit smoking and sadly died of smoking-related illnesses. This reaffirmed my resolve to continue our work incorporating recovery from nicotine addiction into our larger understanding of addiction recovery. My friend’s passing was also a reminder of the preciousness of time. I am at an age where I am losing many long-term friends and colleagues and thinking more and more about how blessed my life has been and the gifts recovery has given me. It has been a fulfilling life and I relish what service still lies ahead for you and I.
