One problem can lead to another. In the case of addiction, depression might have existed either before addiction, or as a result of it. Nevertheless, addiction and depression often exist together and can be closely linked.
To illustrate, Lack of enjoyment in any activities that one has enjoyed previously, change in sleeping habit, insomnia, too much sleeping, feeling emptiness, sadness or worthlessness, changes in eating habits, losing or gaining weight without apparent reasons, having difficulties in focusing on tasks and completing tasks, lacking energy and feeling tired all the time, and desperateness.
Certainly, drug abuse causes an alteration in brain chemistry which results in depression. It also might be a hormonal imbalance of some kind. Additionally the way a person might think can result in depression. Having negative self-image or being despondent can contribute to depression.
Next, one may have a predisposition to depression. Moreover, there is also the possibility of a genetic predisposition to depression. In particular, if a mother or others family members were depressed, that increases the chances of experiencing depression. Besides, in the case of experiencing a series of negative events in life, such as losing a loved one, or experiencing a trauma, or losing job, that can be a contributing cause of addiction and depression.
Finally, remember that we are body, mind and spirit. In both drug addiction and depression, the body might hanker after the drugs, the mind becomes altered because of the drugs and the spirit is destructed by the drug abuse. Depression might have lead to the drug use, or it might have come about because of addiction. Whatever the case, depression is a serious situation, yet, indeed there is help out there.
