I hope this communication finds you, your family, and all members of Congress 60 well and remaining as safe as possible amidst the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. I am doing well and my wife and I were able to get the first of the two-part COVID vaccine last week. It required standing in line for over seven hours but we were able to get one of the last 800 shots that were available locally on the day we went. I am pleased to hear that the D.Sap procedures you are using have prevented COVID 19 deaths within Congress 60. What is the current availability of COVID vaccines in Iran? Here in the U.S., we are just getting started with vaccine distribution and are already far behind on promised availability—again failures in leadership that hopefully will improve with new leadership coming this month.

Thank you for the update on your testing the DST method with other medical conditions. The early results appear quite promising. I would like to hear more detail on the steps used in the treatment of MS and cancer and if there are differences in the procedures used in the treatment of addiction.

The problems you describe regarding the misuses and excessive us of pain and sleeping pills is also one we are experiencing here in the United States. There is so much attention given to the opioid epidemic that these other patterns of addiction remain culturally invisible, as are increases in the use of alcohol and tranquilizers here. These are part of a larger hidden epidemic that we are experiencing and that complicate treatment of addiction and add new threats to recovery maintenance.

On a related issue, an interesting trend in the United States is unfolding: the increased use of medical cannabis and some hallucinogenic drugs in the treatment of a broad range of conditions including opioid addiction. So we have people entering addiction treatment for opioid addiction and people entering NA and other recovery mutual aid groups using these drugs on take-home prescription or as part of other treatment they are undergoing. Are you seeing anything like this in Iran? I think we are going to be seeing interesting questions arise on the distinction between the use of psychoactive substances as intoxicants and the use of some of these same substances as medication. I would be interested in your perspectives on this.

I have been giving more thought to your plans to extend Congress 60 methods in other countries. I agree with you that the DST method would be of great value in these other settings, but I fear some will use this method without wrapping it in the larger culture of recovery that is so important within Congress 60. My worry is that some will see the DST method as a “technological fix” to stem surges in opioid deaths and not see the whole of what recovery within Congress 60 entails. I would be interested in your thoughts on how results would differ if the DST method was employed for example out of physician offices without all the other recovery support activities of Congress 60 that address the cognitive, emotional, relational and spiritual needs of those seeking recovery from addiction.

The video portraying construction activities on Qeshm island were deeply inspiring. It warmed my heart to see how far you have come since we first discussed this idea of a university focused on the study and transmission of knowledge on addiction recovery.  Do keep me updated on this progress. As construction proceeds, perhaps we can coauthor a blog for my website announcing progress to date and plans for the future.
