Dear Hossein,
Your story of Edmund and Helga beautifully captures the Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde duality (radical personality change) of one’s character under the corrupting influence of addiction. It will take us many years in the U.S. to undo the mass incarceration of drug users. In fact, those efforts have just begun in earnest, but there is so much to be done and so many lives damaged through this process. I am pleased to hear that Iran is making progress on this front through more enlightened understandings of the nature of addiction and addiction recovery.
Many efforts are underway in the U.S. to reduce the historical stigma attached to addiction. Most of these are being led by individuals and families in addiction recovery These efforts include public and professional educational campaigns as well as public marches of people celebrating their recovery from addiction. The latter now draw tens of thousands of people who march and give speeches. We are also trying to change the language in which addiction and recovery is expressed. Recovery advocates here are now publicly referring to themselves as people in long-term recovery rather than ex-addicts or former alcoholics and they are challenging applying terms like “abuse” and “abuser” to addiction as these terms are drawn from the language of morality rather than the language of medicine. Doing TV interviews like you describe are also helping change attitudes here. Like you, we are suggesting that people suffering from addiction need compassion and care and not moral judgement and punishment. The images of the exceptional athletes of Congress 60 is a challenge to those long-held stereotypes. As you say, “We must be able to show the Dr. Jekyll to them.”
The propositions that you set forth about addiction are supported by a growing body of scientific research on the neurobiology of addiction. This suggests that some people are more physically vulnerable to addiction than others and that this vulnerability increased when drugs are taken as a substitution that trigger the reward centers of the brain and over time produce the protracted withdrawal and cravings that drive compulsive and prolonged drug use and transform one’s character and values in the process of accommodating those physical needs. I agree with your assessment of these driving forces and their consequences.
I look forward to our discussions of Jaan and the different experience of addiction among men and women. The research on the latter is quite fascinating.
I have not yet posted our communication on my website but I think I could instead periodically pull from our communications quotes from these communications into blogs like we recently did on the subject of leadership of recovery community organizations. I am taking a break from blogging but will consider continuing this joint effort when I begin blogging again. I am pleased that there are appreciative readers of our communications on the Congress 60 website. I have received many notes of appreciation on the last article we did that was posted on my website and which I also shared on social media.
Our weather extremes continue in the U.S. (and around the world). I hope increased fires, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, and hurricanes are not the future of our planet. Those of us who have escaped addiction know more than anyone how precious and fragile is this thing we call life. We must take care of ourselves and the planet that nourishes us.
Please extend my warm regards to your family and to all members of Congress 60. I look forward to our continued communications.
Friends and Brothers Forever,
Bill
