Communications of Hossein and Bill (Reply to Hossein - Apr 10, 2019)

Apr 10,2019

Dear Hossein,

I am doing much better since we last communicated. I caught a bad type of flu that disabled me for a week and required a day in the hospital but I am doing fine now. I am delighted to hear the spring vacation went well for you and for members of Congress 60.

We have experienced similar periods of drought and then flooding in parts of the United States. Extreme weather events are becoming commonplace now even as too many people, including political leaders here in the U.S., deny the reality of climate change and the role humans are playing in it. Such events do provide opportunities for people in recovery to give back some of the service and support that they have been earlier blessed with.

Upon his return, Nader delivered the gifts you sent. They arrived yesterday. The briefcase was so beautiful and the craftsmanship so fine that I was breathless when first viewing it. Please extend my deepest appreciation for the Congress 60 members who made it.  Thank you also for the D-SAP, box of candy, and the photo album of Congress 60. The photos in the album capture the vibrancy of life within Congress 60. I shall cherish these gifts.

I recently read a book on Radical Hope—the story of how the Crow Indian Tribe survived the slaughter of the buffalo, the invasion of its lands, and epidemic disease. The story detailed how a Crow leader guided his people through this period instilling in them hope for the future. The author called this radical hope because it required such an initial leap of faith and a sustained commitment. Reading the book made me think of the kind of leadership you have provided Congress 60 since its founding. And it made me think that one of the things the DST method has given to members of Congress 60 is that kind of radical hope because the first travelers can see evidence all around them of people living full lives in recovery. That’s a powerful form of living proof.

I have not heard from you about recent theatre and other arts activities in Congress 60. Is your daughter Shani still involved in theatre and video/film projects? There seems to be increased interest in such projects here as a way to provide education about addiction and recovery. Do keep me informed of what you are doing in these areas.

Please extend my warn regards to your family and all members of Congress 60.

Friends and Brothers Forever,

Bill
