Dear Hossein,

Thank you for the updated information on the annual examinations within Congress 60. They are quite rigorous and will assure the quality of future leadership and service.  The number of individuals who will be taking the examinations is quite remarkable and a testament to the strength of the Congress 60 community.

I look forward to the photos of the tree planting ceremony. Healing and caring for Mother Earth is a way we give back and also a means through which we heal ourselves. 

Your response, “If a person in recovery could sleep well enough in a warehouse full of narcotics then he is fully recovered” is quite profound. Many who recover here is the U.S. shelter themselves from exposure to alcohol and drugs in fear such exposure would trigger a return to drug use.  I would agree that a cure for addiction would be one in which one not only achieves sustained abstinence but is also freed from the insatiable cravings and attractions to drugs. As you suggest, this may be possible only through a rebalancing of the natural opioids in the body and the accompanying healing of the psyche and worldview that helps sustain that balance. That this could also render one less vulnerable to other disease as you suggest is quite a revolutionary idea and one that should be investigated in our future studies.

I have been thinking this week about the idea of “recovery cascades.” This would occur when a person experiences a dramatic leap forward within their recovery process or when there is a dramatic increase in the number of people within a community or country who initiate recovery from addiction. I am wondering under what conditions such cascades occur and the role of “recovery carriers” (people who by their own recovery, quality of their character, and service to others make recovery contagious) in such processes. I suspect such infectious attraction to recovery occurs within Congress 60 and has occurred through the effects members of Congress 60 have exerted on the communities in which they are nested.

I am reading a book entitle Dopesick about the role of the pharmaceutical industry in the opioid epidemic in the U.S. in recent years. It is a very sad story of the role of corporate greed in spreading prescription drug addiction that then led to surges of heroin and fentanyl addiction. The stories of how a few U.S. drug companies promoted opioids within economically depressed communities are heart-breaking.

Thank you for your kind thoughts about Rita’s back pain. She is doing a bit better each week and we have great hopes for a full recovery in the weeks to come. She is now able to return to our daily walks around the marina, which are a great joy to us.
