Communications of Hossein and Bill (Reply to Hossein - Jun 1, 2017)

Jun 1, 2017

Dear Hossein,

Thank you for sending the photos from the Ramadan gatherings.  I so enjoy receiving these each year.

Your answer to my question, as always, was quite helpful. I had wondered if you encountered people whose addiction was so intractable that they could not make the final transition from OT to recovery supported by no medication.  It seems this has not been a major concern within Congress 60.   I have assumed that the neuro-adaptations and related damage of prolonged addiction would vary considerably from individual to individual and that there might be some individuals so damaged that they might need some continued medication support to remain addiction free.  That seem to be the experience here in the US with our methadone and buprenorphine patients, but I do not have the direct experience with OT used within the DST method of Congress 60.  It seems OT used in this unique way has some very distinctive healing properties.

I am interested in how other clinics in Iran are adapting the DST method.  To me, Congress 60’s success lies not in its unique approach of the DST method, but also in building an elaborate recovery culture around this method that also addresses processes of psychological and spiritual transformation.  Are clinics in Iran who are using the DTS method also emulating these other important aspects of Congress 60.  I look forward to hearing about how your methods are being adapted outside Congress 60, which could give me ideas about how they might be adapted in other countries.

Yesterday I received good health news.  What was feared to be cancer growing in one of my kidneys was diagnosed as a benign cyst.  I will not have to have the surgery that I had been led to expect that I needed.  Needless to say, Rita and I were quite pleased with this news.  I feel remarkably fit for my age, but these occasional health scares do seem to be coming with increased frequency.  I hope your health is doing well these days.

I continue to write each morning and then do phone consultations with various recovery support organizations or recovery research projects.  By mid-afternoon, Rita and I go for walks, run errands, of just read.  It is a very pleasant and far less harried lifestyle than I have lived most of my life. Life is indeed good.

Friends and Brothers Forever,
Bill
